My Artist Statement:

Art is the medium of a message. Art has the potential to create messages that serve a clear purpose, that exist for enjoyment or to be meaningful to its viewers, or it can exist for no intended reason at all. In many of my classes, I am instructed to make things that serve a concrete purpose, for a brand or a campaign. I believe that art can exist and be just as purposeful even if it doesn’t serve a concrete purpose. It can be equally as moving and impactful for its viewers. Therefore, I want to work on art projects that don't exist just to serve clear-cut purpose. My intention for this class is to develop my own purpose for the art I create, or to create just because I enjoy it, for no established purpose at all. Simply put, I think we should get to make more art for enjoyment in life!

Below are a few of the most impactful works of art that I have seen throughout my life, as well as some art I just really enjoy. For example, as a kid, I was influenced by my mother who loves Frida Khalo and would show me lots of her art. “The Two Fridas” shows a struggle between two identities. Frida Khalo created art that represented various struggles she went through in her lifetime, struggles with poor physical health, infertility, and identity, to name a few. I admire the way that Khalo is able to relate her struggles into artwork in such a clear and honest way, I hope to be able to do the same one day!
