Artist Statement:
For this project, we used different sounds to create an audio soundscape. The process behind my project started with listening to every sound in the shared folder. Then, I downloaded my favorites and started to see what I could create with them. The idea behind my project is to create a relatable experience by using only audio, and no visual aids. Based on the sounds I collected I came up with the idea to create a scene where someone is at a party but is not enjoying themselves, begins to have a lot of anxiety, and ends up needing to leave the party.
I chose this because I believe that many people, especially college students, will be able to relate to this experience. In the second half of my project, the person runs outside and the music fades away. Sounds of nature and birds become more prominent. This represents getting a breath of fresh air and an escape from an overwhelming situation. The clock ticking represents the build-up and down of anxiety, kind of like how one’s heart may begin to speed up when feeling anxious. After getting outside, the clock (anxiety) subsides.
I felt that creating this experience went well, although I did end up re-listening to the sounds just in case there were any that I missed that could work well. I ended up using over half the sounds, at least one from almost every student! I am pleased with all the sounds I chose because it functions well with the idea of an “exquisite corpse.” One thing I would do differently is to include more voices. I think a relevant conversation could add great context to the story I set out to tell in this project.
